Merrily Table Mats & Coasters

These are without doubt the easiest and quickest table mats and coasters you will ever make and will most definitely brighten up your Christmas dinner.

First cut out the individual squares on the Merrily – Winter Critters galore panel

Table mats

  1. Cut two strips of fabric 3in x 11in (I used Merrily – Holly Holly and Merrily – Holly Berry).
  2. Using a quarter inch seam allowance sew one strip to either side of the larger squares cut from the panel to form a rectangle and press seams to the side.
  3. Cut a piece of wadding and backing fabric 14in x 11in.
  4. Place the backing fabric wrong side up on the table, cover with the wadding and then put the panel on top right sides up and either baste or use a few pins to hold all the layers together securely.
  5. Quilt the layers together however you wish, I just sewed down either side of the panel on the seam allowance.
  6. Sew binding around each table mat to finish off.

Coasters

  1. Cut a piece of wadding and backing fabric 4 ½ x 5 ½.
  2. Place the backing fabric wrong side up on the table, cover with the wadding and then put the panel on top right sides up and either baste or use a few pins to hold all the layers together securely.
  3. I didn’t quilt the coasters but feel free to be creative if you wish.
  4. Sew binding around each table mat to finish off.

For the binding you could buy pre prepared biased binding but I made my own (I used Merrily – Just a Dash Holly and Merrily – Just a Dash Berry.  Cut two strips of fabric 2 ¼ in x 42in which made enough binding to go around one table mat and one coaster. There is a brilliant tutorial on Craftsy’s website if you are unsure about making your own binding https://www.craftsy.com/blog/2014/09/how-to-bind-quilts/

Hi Gail, you can made 8 table mats and 32 coasters from each panel. You could use two smaller squares for each coaster to make them double sided and also use then for making bunting, Christmas cards or even free motion applique them onto pockets to make your own advent calendar. x

Hi Jaqui does one panel make 4 table mats? Please can you put one panel aside for me and once I get a reply I will do an order. I’m not sure how many panels I. Need.
    Thank you
    Gail
